Volunteers are an important part of a Village. Civic engagement, a benefit of the Village model, is critical to a Village success and strongly benefits the organization’s connection to the community. Maintaining and motivating the volunteer pool requires significant management of time and funds. Investing in volunteers also results in better workflow management and can help to sustain the Village operations. Villages have taken different approaches to manage their volunteer program component. Volunteers can pose risks to a Village if they are not well managed in the areas of recruitment, training and supervision. Drawing upon experience of Villages and other community based nonprofits, this convening will discuss the key components of well managed volunteer programs.
The District of Columbia Office on Aging (DCOA) seeks to assist the D.C.-based Senior Villages to sustain and expand the local Village movement and broaden the local aging network’s ability to serve aging population needs in the District of Columbia (D.C.). DCOA has engaged Capital Impact Partners to provide D.C.-based Villages the opportunity to engage in peer knowledge exchange to strengthen the administration of the Village model, support sustainability practices and replicate the Village model to all older adults throughout the District.
